Hope you will be satisfied with it. If you are using POP3 it is okay, but if IMAP, it is not a very good piece of software, Thunderbird beats it hands down.
Hope you can handle all the virus which comes through it, MS might have already fixed some, so get the OS updated to the latest patch level. I hope someone will come along and make a Outlook like system out of Thuderbird.
Heck, who knows, Thunderbird will run inside Firefox, and Calendar too will be updated to Outlook standard. And I would love to see the Business Contact Manager on Outlook, and wish it will happen. Linspire, are you reading this? Would you support such an initiative. They are doing a very good job supporting NVU, which will become the de facto standard for web development very soon.
I am using POP3 (I have to have reliable access to my e-mail on the road when I might not be able to connect to the Internet).
I ca handle the viruses fine. My antivirus software is always 100% up-to-date. I always download any security updates Microsoft releases on Windows Update and Office Update.
I agree with you. There absolutely needs to be some type of Outlook-like application involving Thunderbird, Sunbird, and anything else that is needed. For many companies and even individuals (like me), that type of program is a killer application.
We’ll see what happens. Like I said in previous posts on my blog…the last thing I wanted to do is abandon Thunderbird, but I needed the functionality that Outlook provides.
Inspired by the original post, I too have made the switch to Outlook from Thunderbird. I have the unfortunate disadvantage (w.r.t. Outlook) of using IMAP – it definately is a third-class citizen that MS go out of their way to make unpleasant to use, presumably to encourage you to use Exchange instead.
After a few hours of tweaking and fiddling, I’ve got something that is workable and probably even superior to Thunderbird in some regards. Getting IMAP to hide messages marked as deleted is a bugger of a task, as is getting it to save sent mail to the server (easily handled via the Rules wizard, but then you require an external add-in to automatically mark these messages as read! argh!! AutoRead is the add-in I used if anyone wants to know).
I find Outlooks insistance of creating Junk E-Mail and Drafts folders on all accounts somewhat frustrating, as my work account I receive no spam and have no desire to have the folder. No option to turn it off on a per-account basis though……….
As Chris mentioned, I’ve found the integration to be refreshing. I find I’m using my PDA more than I used to, as I have Outlook open and it’s now quick & easy to add contacts and appointments. When it comes down to it, at this point in time, my only option for using my PDA is to use Outlook, which makes life using Thunderbird challenging at times.
I’m hoping Thunderbird will reach an on-par feature set at some point in the future….

Why does this require POP3? Most sane IMAP clients (including Thunderbird) allow you to mark folders for offline use, and it keeps local copies of everything.
