Switching to Gaim?
I am seriously considering switching from my AIM & DeadAIM combo for instant messaging to Gaim.
The reasons are numerous. AIM has steadly gotten more and more bloated, buggy, and generally a pain in the ass. DeadAIM fixed many of the lacking features in AIM, but it adds a new level of bugginess to AIM.
I have tried Gaim previously and found it too lacking feature wise and pretty buggy. Well I just tried version 1.0.3 and I am very impressed with how well it works so far. I am right now signed onto four different instant messaging services (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber) and not missing a beat. I am so impressed that I am going to give it a one week trial. If everything goes well, I will switch to Gaim full time for my instant messaging needs.

Gaim is good in Linux but I tend to prefer Trillian in Windows. I’ve even paid for the pro version, and have just reviewed the new version 3. That said, it’s been a while since I last used Gaim in Windows.
I’ve already switched. The interface isn’t pretty nor the best, but it sure works and integrates my MSN, ICQ and Jabber contacts well. Perhaps I should check out Trillian too.
GAIM is good. I’ve tried Miranda before, but it doesn’t import the ICQ list from server nicely, e.g. it doesn’t import the groups.
The tabbed interface is good. The only bad thing is that it doesn’t support file transfer for ICQ, and the sound effect is a bit loud.
Do you know if GAIM supports the various minor features of AIM, such as file transfer and multi-user chat sessions? I use AIM for communication among my coworkers and I’d consider switching to GAIM (or Trillian) if it included those features.
Gaim supposedly does, but I haven’t tried them yet.
