Linksys WRT54G firmware

I have been an owner of a Linksys WRT54G wireless router since about June and I still cannot say enough nice things about it. First of all, never had a problem with getting it working and keeping it working. Of course, it could help that I deal with Linksys products often at work so I know them pretty well.

I have had this unit on 24/7 for 2-3 months straight without requiring a reboot (and I don’t even have an UPS for this). Of course, little power blips here and there could cause it to reboot but I haven’t noticed this happening yet.

Even better, Linksys has released about three or four firmware upgrades for this unit alone, most of them adding features and making minor bug fixes.

I just downloaded and installed firmware version 3.01.3 for the router. So far it appears to be functioning just fine. I’m hoping, since one of the new features is an “updated wireless driver” that the occassional weird 1 second disconnect that I see rarely but at random is fixed. In fact, that is the only bug that I have ever experienced with this wireless router.

90s weekend

I just got back from dropping Katie off at the bus station. For some strange reason, I felt an urge to revisit my musical roots, specifically the early to mid 1990s. Side benefit is that since Katie doesn’t share the same music tastes, I get to listen to it in peace without her saying “that sucks!” before, during, and after every song.

Many of the albums that first got me into music haven’t seen the CD player lately thanks to how busy work and life in general has been. It is amazing how fresh and pure a classic album sounds after not listening to it in a while, especially when it is the music that got me into music in the first place.

First into the CD player:

Stone Temple Pilots “Purple”

After that, I may go into a Nirvana mood…then some Pearl Jam.

Snow

At around 12:30pm yesterday, the first snowfall of the year hit Manchester, NH. We only got about an inch at best, but it was still nice to see that white stuff around again. Let’s hope it only snows on the weekends or at night with enough time to clear the roads before I go to and leave work :)

Since Katie is going to see her best friend at college this weekend, I have the tasks of cleaning up the place and studying for my CCNA exam. It is hard stuff to memorize, but it is pretty interesting and I am easily filling in gaps in my network knowledge. Maybe I can finish that first book this weekend and reach the halfway point. We will see.

Microsoft says Firefox is not threat to IE

Stories like this always make me laugh, especially this quote:

“Vamos, who admitted he has never used Firefox, said there is a lot of hype surrounding the open-source movement and that if Microsoft’s customers wanted new features, they would have told the company about it. “

Many Microsoft customers have told the company about it. It is Microsoft that hasn’t done anything about it.

Also, how can you make a comment (especially even a semi-educated one) about a competitor’s product when you have never used or seen it?

Artest is an absolute jerk

Ron, if you really rather promote your album then play basketball, walk away from your contract and let the Pacers spend the money on someone who really cares about two things: playing basketball and winning.

You heard it here first…if Ron Artest is playing for the Pacers again this season, they won’t win the championship. Having any individual on a team that pulls a stunt like Artest will pull everyone else down.

As a Celtics fan, it wouldn’t hurt me in theory if he brought the Pacers down because of his antics. However, it hurts the game of basketball by pulling this stunt and ultimately the Celtics.

I thought Iverson and Bryant were the ultimate poster boys of what was wrong with the NBA. Guess I am wrong, there is a new poster boy that is even worse then them.
