Site update

As you can tell, I am doing some major changes to my web site. I am working on moving my entire blog from the old http://www.chrisgonyea.com/blog/ address to http://chrisgonyea.com/. Sounds like a small change, but it really isn’t. While doing this, I am also upgrading my entire site to WordPress 1.3 alpha 6 (December 20th build).

Please be patient while things change around.

Pedro to the Mets

I just heard about a hour ago that Pedro to the Mets was essentially a done move. The Mets were willing (or let’s say just plain crazy) to go to 4 years and well over 50 million to sign him.

I can’t say I am surprised by the move. That is a hell of a lot of money to give up. Not to mention, he gets 4 more seasons instead of 3 (Pedro has repeatedly said that he plans for this to be his final contract). I hope he is a class act at the press conference and hope he knows what he is getting into with the Mets.

To me, regardless of what just happened, Pedro is always a member of the Boston Red Sox. For 5-6 seasons he was as close to perfect that a pitcher could get. Spectacular. I don’t know how many late nights I spent watching a game because Pedro Martinez was pitching.

Sadly, I never had a chance to watch Pedro pitch in person. But I did seem him at the victory parade. A priceless moment I will never forget. Just like a priceless career Pedro has had.

Good luck Pedro. You are going to need it.

Update (5:08 PM EST): According to Boston Dirt Dogs, it is a done deal.

WP 1.3 alpha experiment

I am going to start building an entirely new version of my site using the new WordPress 1.3 alphas. It will be hosted at http://www.chrisgonyea.com/ until I’m happy with the results (and comfortable enough with the alphas/betas of WordPress 1.3) then I will move it over to replace this current blog.

The new features in this new version of WordPress are simply amazing. From the looks of it I can completely manage an entire web site from WordPress, right down to non-blog related pages (such as a contact page or an about page). The theme switching abilities are simply incredible. Right down the line, there is no reason to not plan for WordPress 1.3.

I haven’t decided yet if I am going to continue using Kubrick or if I am going to write my own theme. The former would be much easier and would probably have fewer issues, the later would allow me to create a site entirely based on my vision and would help me learn more about PHP as well as other web site technologies.

Pixies

This past Wednesday, my brother and I attended the Pixies show in Lowell, MA. Very odd being able to even attend a Pixies concert. We both thought it would never happen, especially since they broke up so long ago (early 90s) and the music scene now isn’t exactly that great for an alternative revival. Here they were though and we literally held our breath the hours leading up to the show.

I tell you what, the wait was worth it. The Pixies were simply spectacular, Mission of Burma was unbelievable as the second opening band (I really need to check this band out), and evening the opening band The Bennies were decent. Mission of Burma really set the standard on how to get the crowd ready for the Pixies, they were absolutely spectacular.

The Pixies were out of this world. Extremely tight on stage, clearly having a blast playing in front of a hometown crowd (they were from Boston originally), and milked every drop of energy out of the crowd. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing. Quite magical, as others have said. I will never forget it.

My new top 5 for shows I have attended:
1) Mission of Burma, Pixies
2) Muse, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers
3) Puddle of Mudd (SUCKED), Staind
4) The Ataris
5) Boston
