OS X has something like that in the form of Growl which works with a variety of other apps too.
iTunes Now Playing plugin
This open source iTunes plugin adds functionality that I have been looking for a long while - notification of the track currently being played through a small popup window that automatically disappears after a short period of time.

it needs an update it freezes Itunes if your modifing the tag of any song and with the gapless playback it’s desplaying the wrong album cover

Is there something that I can do to make possible the names scroll in the popup window?
